Being Thankful

Be thankful in all circumstances,
for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:8 nlt

This is a verse that is not difficult to understand. We are to be thankful no matter where we are or what we are experiencing be it good or bad, easy or hard, happy or sad. Why? Because we belong to Jesus and whatever is happening it is part of God’s will for us.

Okay, that was easy to type. But not always easy to believe. When life is going according to my plans or without problems I have no problem accepting that all is just as God wants for me and I am thankful without hesitation. But when my plans go awry and there are unexpected interruptions and problems or there are circumstances not to my liking I tend to question God’s will and there is little thought of being thankful.heart-71227_640

Then Jesus reminds me of this promise;

For I know the plans I have for you,
declares the LORD,
plans for welfare and not for evil,
to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 29:11 esv

He has plans for us. Anything that happens (or doesn’t happen) in our lives cannot change what He has planned. With Him we have a future and a hope. That is reason enough to be thankful in all circumstances.

Nothing is a surprise to Him. He knows those who belong to Him. He has plans for us. Nothing will prevent God’s will from being done.
Thank you, Jesus!

The last few days I have been thinking about being thankful. This came about because of a conversation I had with an acquaintance. This person said there is no reason to be thankful because there is not much to be happy about and life is always hard with little of love in it.

When I was at home and thinking about our talk I wondered about my own thoughts of thankfulness. Am I only thankful when I am happy or feeling loved? Is my gratitudeabandoned-1845921_640 dependent on what I understand? My perspective is limited to time and place but is it meant to be broader?

Talking to Jesus reminded me of this;

Be thankful in all circumstances,
for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
1Thes 5:18 nlt

Yes, my view of thankfulness is to be broader. It is meant to be eternal in scope. Be thankful in all circumstances, the good, the bad, and the ugly. If I am only thankful in the good am I really thankful? If I am not thankful in the bad and ugly circumstances am I seeing only with my limited eyesight and not looking through the eyes of the Spirit to see the whole picture?

And we know that God causes everything to work together
for the good of those who love God and are called
according to his purpose for them.
Ro 8:28 nlt

I am thankful. Every day there are blessings. But what about those times that are difficult when there are hurts and sorrows and it is hard to see the blessings? Am I looking at life too narrowly seeing only with perspective limited by time and place rather than with the perspective of eternity? Of course, I am! But every day I am closer to understanding life and gratitude. Today,  I am truly thankful that the Lord has a full understanding of me and still, He loves me.

Blessings this day of grace,

1 Thessalonians 5:19 gw

The fire of the Spirit, that enthusiasm and passion
for the things of God, that burns within needs to be carefully tended.
 It can burn out or burn wildly if neglected or taken for granted.
There are times it needs to be stirred up
 using our gifts and talents and the graces we have been given.
And sometimes it needs to be restrained and closely contained.

The Spirit will not leave us but let us be vigilant
in keeping His fire bright within us.

What is your fire like today?  Does it need tending?

Blessings this day of gracepatricia,
